Premier of Ontario,
Honourable Doug Ford

Legislative Building
Queen’s Park
Toronto, ON
M7A 1A1

Mr. Ford,

I am writing you today because I believe the civil rights of our organization to host an event on the University of Toronto campus were recently violated. Our request to book space on the University of Toronto campus for a September 14th event last year was prohibited without legitimate reason.

It has come to my attention recently that your provincial government has made a commitment to the people of Ontario to protect free speech on campuses. Your office has stated that post-secondary institutions will “face reductions to their operating grant proportional to the severity of non-compliance” and that schools must “remain open to discussion and free inquiry, should not shield students from ideas or opinions they find offensive and will not allow students or teachers to obstruct others from expressing their views”.

For the entirety of this political campaign, our group has not said a hateful word, caused no violence, and done nothing illegal. Yet, publicly-funded institutions such as the University of Toronto feel compelled to suppress our ability to promote our political party to the citizens of Ontario.

Mr. Ford, I think our case is a perfect opportunity for you to demonstrate to the people of Ontario that you are serious about free speech on campuses, especially when it pertains to a political party competing in the upcoming 43rd Federal Election. Such a suppression of our ability to communicate our political platform to the people of Ontario limits their ability to make an informed decision come election time and ultimately diminishes the sanctity of our democracy.

I encourage you to consider either of the following options as it pertains to our situation:

  1. Reduce the amount of public funding the University of Toronto receives due to its failure to abide by your mandate.
  2. Permit the Canadian Nationalist Party to host an event on the University of Toronto campus where we will peacefully and respectfully communicate our political platform with the people of Ontario.

I am available to meet in person to discuss the details of this situation and what the best steps may be for moving forward with an event.

Yours sincerely,

Travis Patron
Leader of the Canadian Nationalist Party
